Four Top Science Fiction Adult Costumes for Couples.
No other genre has done so much in recent years to portray strong female characters in our movies and as a result, if you’re looking for adult costumes for couples, science fiction has a lot to offer.
I’ve already covered Avatar in a previous post (see Avatar costumes) but it doesn’t take much to uncover a lot of films in this space that lend themselves perfectly to a Halloween costume party.
First up is the classic sci-fi heroine: Ripley. The poor woman has been through so much with all those slimy aliens, but she still comes out on top. What can we do here if we’re looking for adult costumes for couples? The obvious combination would be a Ripley costume and an Alien costume, a bit restrictive for the guy, but theoretically you get two tongues and surely that’s a good thing.
Slightly less obvious, but maybe easier to pull off would be to go as Ripley but to get a colonial marine costume for him – go as Hicks, the tough but kind-hearted marine from Aliens. This should let you choose slightly more generic military gear and then customise it slightly for the final touches….get the number 42 on the gun display, put a camera on the 
side of the helmet – hmm, starting to sound like a geek here!
Second in the list of rich series for costume ideas would be the Terminator films. You could try for a Sarah Connor costume from the first film – all 80’s big hair and wide-eyed terror, but at this point I struggle for which way to go. It would be much more romantic to find a Kyle Reese outfit, but this would be pretty generic. I guess you could get away with a lot more like this, but personally I reckon it’s worth the extra effort to find a full Terminator costume. Even here, you might get away with a flak jacket and a full head mask, but don’t forget your “phase-plasma rifle in the 40-watt range” – oops, there I go again!
Third in the list of big hitters is The Matrix. I’m not going to go through all the possibilities here, but finding a Neo costume and a Trinity costume should make you instantly recognisable. If you are as picky as me, see if you can find an old Nokia 6110 on ebay for the slide action phone that Neo uses. Sigh, wish I’d never given mine away!
Finally, just to prove how deeply sad I really am, you could hit up the Firefly series (or Serenity film) for a thousand adult costumes for couples – well, a few anyway!
Mal is not only a really strong character, but a Browncoat costume appearance is both easy to pull off and easy to accessorize. You can go in a lot of directions for a female lead as so many of the characters are so memorable. How about Zoe, Mal’s right-hand man(?) – as a tough military character, she should be easy to outfit. Or what about going as Inara, finding a costume that works for a “Companion” should be pretty easy.
The beauty of science fiction as a genre is that the womens’ lead roles don’t always stray into the purely pornographic. Sexy, yes, but strong and sometimes even fully-dressed! It’s just these characteristics that make this a perfect hunting ground for adult costumes for couples.
